What is HIFU?

HIFU is a non-surgical treatment for tightening, smoothing, firming and lifting skin and deeper tissues reducing the appearance of ageing without the down time associated with laser resurfacing or surgical facelift.

How does HIFU work?

It combines ultrasound and radio frequency technology, all in one simple procedure.

It’s a very targeted treatment so the skin and deeper tissues (SMAS) are affected. The body’s natural healing process produces a new, healthy and tighter appearence of the face and neck.

What conditions and areas can be treated with HIFU?

Combined with INTRAcel.

  • Skin tightening around eyes, the top lip, around the mouth, the jowls, the neck, hands, the chest and other body areas such as the abdomen, thighs, buttocks and knees
  • Acne and acne scarring
  • Persistent open pores
  • Stretch marks
  • Skin Laxity or wrinkles after liposuction or VASER procedures

When will I see results?

Generally the skin will begin to feel and look smoother and tighter even after one treatment, the results from the treatment will continue to improve for up to six months. The results are variable, depending on the original quality of the skin, deeper tissues and degree of damage to be treated.

How many HIFU treatments will I need?

The number of treatments required will depend on the area being treated and the quality of the skin. For lower face, brow and neck tightening / lifting we usually recommend a complimentary ‘top up’ second session 3-4 months after your treatment. For acne scars, wrinkle and pore reduction using INTRAcel 2-4 treatments are recommended. Dr Ranjan Upadhyay will be able to discuss this with you during your consultation.

How is HIFU treatment carried out?

  • The HIFU treatment is performed at our Practice in London.
  • The treatment itself usually takes between 30-60 minutes, depending on the area
  • The device head will be passed over the skin
  • You will experience a prickling sensation followed by a feeling of heat
  • It is likely several passes to the planned treatment area will be required during each session.

Does HIFU hurt?

For skin tightening and lifting no anaesthetic is usually required (although we can provide pain relief and mild sedatives if needed).

The levels of treatment can be adjusted to suit patient comfort. If you are worried about discomfort or feel nervous about the treatment you can discuss these concerns with Dr Ranjan Upadhyay who will suggest the appropriate response.

Is HIFU safe?

Yes, the treatment is safe but it must be carried out by a trained and experienced health care professional to ensure that different areas are treated at the correct levels. As with any treatment it is important to discuss any possible side effects with Dr Ranjan Upadhyay in your consultation.

What are the side effects of HIFU?

You may experience a deep mild sunburnt sensation for a few days after treatment, then virtually no discomfort.

The skin can be red for a few hours; this usually resolves within 24 hours, this is a normal sign that the skin is healing deeply. Swelling is minimal particularly under the eyes (if treated) and resolves in 1-2 days. Sometimes a small bruise can occur.

Other possible side effects will be discussed in your consultation with Dr Ranjan Upadhyay.

Care following treatment

The use of a high factor sunscreen (30+) following the treatment is very important to protect the skin during the healing phase and for several weeks following treatment.

Aloe Vera gel and cold compresses can be applied following treatment if required.

All your aftercare needs will be discussed by Dr Ranjan Upadhyay in the consultation process and he is on hand after the treatment to answer your questions.
